How Our Indicator Applies to Both
A real usage guide — not generic advice — built specifically around Gold's behavior.
What Is Gold Futures? (Standard vs Micro)
Gold Futures are contracts traded on a real, regulated exchange — the CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) — not through a broker's own dealing desk like spot Gold on MT5. There are two main sizes:
Standard Gold Futures (GC)
100 troy ounces per contract. This is the original, full-size contract — high margin, high dollar-value per tick movement. Built for well-capitalized traders and institutions.
Micro Gold Futures (MGC)
10 troy ounces per contract — 1/10th the size of Standard. Much lower margin requirement, popular with smaller retail accounts who still want the transparency of exchange-traded Gold.
💡 Key Difference From MT5 Spot Gold
Gold Futures contracts have an expiration date (monthly/quarterly cycles) — you must close or roll your position before expiry. Spot Gold (XAUUSD) on MT5 has no expiry; positions can stay open indefinitely, subject only to overnight swap fees.
Pips, Ticks & Units — The Part Everyone Gets Confused About
This is one of the biggest sources of confusion when traders move between Spot Gold and Gold Futures — the two use completely different terminology and dollar values for the exact same price movement.
📱 Spot Gold (MT5) — "Pips"
On MT5, gold is usually quoted with 2 or 3 decimal places (e.g. 2345.67 or 2345.678). Most brokers treat a $0.10 move in price as "1 pip" — but this genuinely varies by broker, so always check your specific broker's contract specification. Dollar value per pip then depends entirely on your lot size:
| Lot Size | Approx. Value Per Pip ($0.10 move) |
|---|---|
| 0.01 (micro lot) | ≈ $0.10 |
| 0.10 (mini lot) | ≈ $1.00 |
| 1.00 (standard lot) | ≈ $10.00 |
📈 Gold Futures — "Ticks"
Futures don't use the word "pip" at all — they use ticks, and the tick size is fixed by the exchange (CME), not the broker. This is actually simpler once you know the numbers, because it never changes:
| Contract | Tick Size | Tick Value |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (GC) — 100 oz | $0.10 | $10.00 per tick |
| Micro (MGC) — 10 oz | $0.10 | $1.00 per tick |
🧮 Real Example — Same Price Move, Different Language
Gold moves from $2,345.00 to $2,350.00 — a $5.00 move.
• On MT5 spot gold (broker calling $0.10 = 1 pip): that's 50 pips. On a 0.10 lot, that's roughly $50 profit.
• On Micro Gold Futures (MGC): that's 50 ticks × $1.00 = $50 profit per contract — coincidentally the same in this example, but the tick value is fixed regardless of any "lot size" choice, since futures contracts are a fixed size.
⚠️ Why This Matters for Risk Management
In spot gold, YOU choose your lot size, so your risk per pip is flexible. In futures, the contract size is fixed — your risk per tick is fixed too. This means position sizing in futures is done by choosing how many contracts to trade, not by adjusting a lot size like on MT5.
Gold Futures vs Spot Gold (MT5) — Side by Side
Here's exactly how the two compare, so you can see the real trade-offs:
| Factor | Gold Futures (GC/MGC) | Spot Gold — MT5 (XAUUSD) |
|---|---|---|
| Traded on | Regulated exchange (CME) | Broker's own OTC book (CFD) |
| Expiry | Yes — monthly/quarterly | None — hold indefinitely |
| Trading hours | Set exchange hours + daily break | Nearly 24/5, no daily break |
| Price source | Centralized, transparent order book | Broker's own quote (aggregated feed) |
| Broker needed | Futures broker (Tradovate, NinjaTrader, AMP, IBKR) | Any MT5 broker (Vigco, Vantage, etc.) |
| Typical margin | Higher (Standard) / Moderate (Micro) | Low — broker-set leverage |
| Stop loss / TP / Market orders | Same concepts, executed via exchange order book | Same concepts, executed by broker against their book |
Is Spot Gold (MT5) Manipulated? Is Futures Safer?
This is the question everyone asks — here's the honest, factual answer:
Spot Gold CFDs on MT5 are a contract between you and your broker, not an exchange. With a poor-quality, unregulated "dealing desk" broker, there's a theoretical conflict of interest — the broker can technically take the other side of your trade. This is exactly why which broker you use matters enormously.
Gold Futures, by contrast, are matched on a centralized, regulated exchange (CME) with fully transparent price discovery — no single party can control the price you see. This is a real structural advantage of futures.
✅ How to Reduce This Risk on Spot Gold
Use a No-Dealing-Desk (NDD) / ECN-style broker that passes your orders straight to liquidity providers instead of trading against you. This is exactly why we only recommend regulated, NDD-style brokers like Vigco and Vantage Markets — it removes the conflict-of-interest concern almost entirely for retail-sized trading.
⚠️ Our Honest Take
Futures markets are structurally more transparent. But for most retail traders, the practical difference — when using a reputable NDD broker — is smaller than people assume. The bigger risk factor is almost always broker choice and risk management, not the instrument type itself.
Minimum Money Required — Realistic Numbers
Capital requirements are very different between the two. These are typical ranges — always confirm exact figures with your specific broker, since margin requirements change with market volatility:
Standard Gold Futures (GC)
Often $8,000–$12,000+ in margin for overnight positions. Some futures brokers offer lower day-trading-only margins, but overnight holding requires substantially more capital.
Micro Gold Futures (MGC)
Roughly $800–$1,500 for overnight — about 1/10th of Standard. Some futures brokers offer day-trading margins as low as $50–$100, but that's intraday-only.
Spot Gold — MT5
With broker leverage, you can realistically start with $10–$50 on a 0.01 lot, though we always recommend starting with at least $100–$200 for proper risk management room.
Our Advice
If you're a beginner or trading with under $1,000, Spot Gold on MT5 through a reputable NDD broker is the realistic, accessible starting point — this is what we teach and what our tools (Robot, Indicator, Signals) are built for.
If you already have $2,000+ in dedicated trading capital and want the structural transparency of an exchange, Micro Gold Futures (MGC) is a reasonable next step to explore — with a proper futures broker.

What Futures & Serious Gold Traders Say
"I trade Micro Gold Futures on CME and was still paying $500/month for a signal group for context. Switched to the OladoFX indicator on my Gold chart — same institutional zones, one-time cost. Cancelled the signal subscription immediately."
"I was guessing entries on GC futures based on gut feeling. This indicator's Order Block marks line up almost exactly with where price reacts on the futures chart too. No more guessing."
"Honestly didn't know the real difference between spot gold and futures until I read through this whole page. Cleared up so much confusion for me, and I use the indicator on my futures chart now too."
"I'm in back-to-back meetings most of the day. My phone buzzes, I glance at the chart, the zone is already marked with entry and SL/TP — I place the trade in under a minute and get back to work."
"I used to stress for hours trying to figure out where to enter and where price would reverse. Now the indicator just shows me the zone and I execute. It removed the guesswork completely — that alone changed my trading."
"I work full-time as an engineer and can't stare at charts all day. The indicator flags the zone, I get a quick alert between meetings, and I'm in and out of the trade in minutes without missing anything at my job."
"I was paying for a Gold futures signal service every single month before finding this. Switched to running the indicator on my own chart instead, and it's genuinely saved me a lot of money since."
"I'm not a natural chart reader and didn't want to spend months learning where price might reverse. This does that thinking for me — I just follow the structure it draws and it's made me far more consistent."
"I'm a full-time nurse with odd shift hours. I get an alert, check my phone on a quick break, and the entry and exit levels are already laid out for me. Perfect for someone who can't be glued to a screen all day."
"I used to jump between three different paid signal groups just to cross-check calls before trading futures. This one indicator on my own chart replaced all three — and it's been more accurate than any of them, honestly."
"I always thought Gold futures were too complicated for someone like me. This page explained it better than weeks of random YouTube videos I'd watched — learned more here in ten minutes than I had in months."
